WAY BEYOND BORDERS Ch-4 Sunlight After Clouds

Chapter 4: Sunlight After Clouds
April 19, 2025
The entire day was exhausting and the weather gloomy — dark clouds hung heavy since the 17th. But then, at 4:19 PM...
"Dear Participants,

The clouds suddenly parted. Sunlight poured through.
Just minutes earlier, my mother had lost her gold earrings. But in that instant, everything else faded. I had been selected.
Until then, I hadn’t shared anything about the program publicly. I was afraid of failure. But now? I proudly announced my selection all over!
My family, friends, my coach, my principal, teachers even my relatives congratulated me — though most of them didn’t fully understand what I’d been selected for. Still, it didn’t matter. I had made it.
I was all over the newspapers. My photo, my name, my achievement — it was finally being celebrated. But amidst the excitement, something felt off.
What disappointed me wasn’t the attention — it was what was missing from the story. The headlines gave credit to my school, but not to the journey behind it. There was no mention of the struggles, the sacrifices, the hours of preparation, or the deep support of my parents and coach who had stood by me unconditionally.
It felt strange. This was the same school that hadn’t always recognized my efforts when I brought home medals from national tournaments, managed leadership roles, pushed through personal struggles or when I consistently gave my all as a topper. My achievements were often met with silence. But now, when something big had happened, they proudly claimed it as theirs.
Yes, the institution helped with documents and formalities. And yes, I’m grateful for that. But the credit? It belonged to the journey — not just the destination.
Of course, I smiled for the pictures. But inside, I quietly wished someone had said,
"She worked for it. She fought for it. She deserves every bit of this."

AFS India encouraged us to start learning japanese. They introduced us to the Student Learning Journey platform — full of modules, meetups, and live sessions to support us through our exchange experience.
