WAY BEYOND BORDERS Ch-0 Before The Spark
Chapter 0: Before The Spark
Before the spark, there was me. A sixteen-year-old girl from India, carrying dreams far bigger than her small town. Long before I knew I’d fly across borders, I had already lived a life filled with discipline, ambition, and wonder.
I’ve always been many things—an athlete, an artist, a student leader, a sister, a daughter, a dreamer. Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’m a National-Level Taekwondo Athlete with five national participations, and I’ve proudly brought home both Gold and Silver medals. I’ve competed in athletics, football, and yoga too—but Taekwondo is where my soul feels most alive. It’s not just about the kicks or the medals; it’s about the spirit.
But my world isn’t just made of mats and medals. Art is my retreat. I love painting, drawing, sketching—but what makes me different is my love for magazine collage art. It’s like piecing together different parts of life to make one whole expression. Maybe that’s also what I’m doing with my life—piecing together everything I love.
In school, I’ve always been known as the girl who does it all. Currently serving as the Vice School Captain and previously the House Captain, I take part in everything—from cultural events to leadership roles. My friends often joke, “Is there anything Tanisha hasn’t tried?” One even calls me "Tanisha—THE GREAT." I know they’re half-teasing, but deep down, I think they mean it. I’ve earned the nickname “Ms. All-Rounder” for a reason.
If you asked my family to describe me, you’d probably hear: determined, passionate, disciplined… and yes, a little stubborn. The good kind of stubborn—the kind that doesn’t quit. I push through, even when I’m tired, even when I cry, even when I feel like giving up. I get things done.
Family means everything to me. As the eldest daughter, I lead by example. My younger sister may not admit it, but she follows in the path I create. My parents—my biggest supporters—have always trusted me with my own decisions, while gently guiding me when I needed them most. They’ve taught me to be kind, to be grounded, and to never fear hard work.
My friends bring light into my life. I believe success isn’t complete unless it’s shared. Whenever I get opportunities, I involve them, helping them believe in their talents too. During a school rangoli competition, I convinced my friends to join. They didn’t think they were good enough, but we created something beautiful together. That moment taught me how confidence can be contagious.
Leadership is part of my everyday life. As Vice Captain, I organize events like Teachers' Day, farewell ceremonies, and school programs. I also mentor juniors in Taekwondo, and yes if you're ever up for it, I’d be happy to teach you a move or two!
Everything I do—sports, studies, art, leadership—it all reflects my belief that giving your best matters more than winning. I don’t fear losing. I fear not learning.
Outside of school, my curiosity runs wild. I love reading about society, culture, and global issues. I dream of studying commerce and social science, and combining those with my love for sports. Maybe one day, I’ll work in international law, business, or sports management. Whatever path I take, I want to lead, to connect, and to create impact.
Of course, I’ve had setbacks. There was a time I wasn’t performing well in Taekwondo—injuries, exhaustion, frustration. I wanted to give up. But I didn’t. I rested, recovered, returned. That’s how I know I’m stronger than any obstacle.
Here’s a glimpse of the things I enjoy and pursue regularly:
Athletic: 1.5 hours of Taekwondo training every day.
Cultural:Exploring art forms and traditions.
Intellectual: Reading about language, culture, and global systems.
Creative:Painting, sketching, craftwork, photography—and yes, I’ve even sold my art.
Social:Organizing school activities, mentoring, and volunteering.
I’m always eager to learn more. I want to know how others live, what they celebrate, how they think. I want to share my own culture while embracing new ones.
So before the spark that ignited this journey, this was me: A girl with a dream. A life full of color, sweat, laughter, late nights, quiet tears, and unshakable belief in herself. I didn’t know then that Japan was waiting for me.
Even if I didn’t know where life would take me, every choice, every scar, and every spark inside me was already preparing me for something beyond borders.
